Jack Hay – First Echuca South Life Member
In these days of 100,000 dollar (plus) contracts I often wonder how South induced players to don the red and white guernsey in those early days of formation.
The change rooms were the back of a furniture van, which was also our transport for away games. The ground was close to where we play today but devoid of trees, fences, buildings etc. Four bush poles either end and a boundary line and goal squares, add to this the fact that we were the percentage builders for the opposition “if we only got beaten by 10 or 12 goals the coach would say we’re improving”.
It is a wonder we survived but here we are, and a lot of people can look back with pride on our achievement.
Since 1952 our first year we have annexed four premierships, twelve runners-up. From 1964 to 1984 we never missed the final four.
I referred to a lot of people and thanks must go to a lot of dedicated people, men and women who over the years have sweated and toiled to make this club what it is today.
The coaches, the players, the committees, the trainers, the supporters, the sponsors far too numerous to mention, and to mention just a few would be sacrilege.
But the memories are still there, the good times and the bad, the ups and downs, more good than bad. The opposition players and men in white who you have possibly abused verbally during the afternoon and ten minutes after the final siren, you are in clubrooms enjoying a glass of beer with them, the best of friends.
Well that is what footy is all about and when I look back on the great guys I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made through football I can say it has all been well worthwhile.

Jack O’Neill – Echuca East – Club Person of the Year and Life Member
Outstanding Service
It was during his association with the junior teams, where his three sons played in the 1950’s that Jack saw many of the young players emerge who were to go on and become great senior players. These players contributed to the successes of the club but over all these years Jack still firmly believes that it is the club that comes first and foremost.
Without taking any praise for his efforts from year to year, Jack has contributed an enormous amount for the club. He has lived by his own rule of thumb “we all do our bit where we can… then the next year it is forgotten and we do our bit once again… it is always the club that will remain and not us individuals”.
